The 98 Lace Group is a fellowship of lacemakers with varied textile backgrounds, united by a common goal of giving modern lace a livelier public profile. The group was set up following a meeting in London in 1998, although members are distributed throughout the British Isles, maintaining contact through our newsletter — ‘Network’. We have two residential weekends each year — one with a workshop led by a tutor in design or textiles and allied crafts, the other a ‘Chairman's Challenge’ where the current Chairman challenges members to produce work to a given theme incorporating assorted items provided and threads of their choice. Additional meetings are arranged regionally at exhibitions, museums and other events, with the aim of inspiring members to produce original work, pushing forward the traditional boundaries while demonstrating the relevance of lace today.
Selections of lace that the group has exhibited can be found on our Gallery pages. Gallery 6 is of lace from our most recent exhibition, Gateways, while Gallery 5 has exhibits from our previous exhibition, Study, Design & Create, held at The Bowes Museum in 2012; the other galleries have lace from earlier exhibitions. A CD featuring lace from our exhibition at the De Morgan Gallery in 2008 (Gallery 1) is also available.
Our next exhibition, Colour Coded, will be at Mount Grace Priory from 29th April to 2th July 2017
